If something’s worth doing, then it’s worth doing well.

Of course, we don’t start out as experts at something.  It takes time and effort to become a virtuoso.

I’ve come up with 10 steps to improving at anything.  I think that they’re transferable to just about any activity, whether it’s playing golf, public speaking, leadership or anything else, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

  1. Do it!
  2. Do it again!
  3. Do it some more!
  4. Do it when you feel like it
  5. Do it when you don’t feel like it
  6. Read books about it
  7. Find a mentor or coach who does it well
  8. Get feedback about how well you do it
  9. Teach someone else how to do it
  10. Do it every day and keep doing it!

There it is, 10 simple steps.  Just replace the “it” with your chosen task and get to it.

I’m sorry if you were expecting something more scientific and complicated, but I suspect that if you were to diligently and persistently apply these steps to your chosen craft, then you will see significant improvement over time.

What do you think?

Is there an 11th step that’s missing?

Is there a skill or task that these steps wouldn’t work for?
