McDonald’s have an interesting strategy when it comes to the ergonomic design of the tables and chairs in their restaurants.

They are strategically designed so that they are comfortable at first, but not if you sit in them for too long.

They want people to feel at home for a while, but not for too long so that they move on and create space for new customers.

I believe that the role of the coach is to be the McDonald’s furniture for the people around us.

It should be OK for people to feel comfortable for a short while, but then to get moving.

We should be encouraging the people around us to feel uncomfortable if they stay in the same place for too long.

We should be helping people to set ambitious goals, to overcome their fears, to move towards their dreams.

We should be the voice of reason that says, “What got you here, won’t take you there,” stating clearly that if we’re not growing, we’re probably shrinking.

We should be catalysts of change, challenging the status quo and facilitating innovative solutions to challenging problems.

We should be helping people to identify the burning platforms that they should be jumping off and the exciting future that they have to leap towards.

We should be reminding people that just as you can’t steer a ship that’s not moving, you won’t find your purpose by staying in the same place for too long.

We should be role-modeling the path of personal development, challenging our own ideas and constantly learning new things that we can apply in our own lives and relationships.

We should be nudging, prompting, suggesting and even occasionally pushing.

The ergonomics of coaching.

Encouraging positive change in a world that’s perhaps a bit too comfortable.
