As a father of three young children, I’ve bought and assembled dozens of toys over the past few years that contain those dreaded words:

“Batteries Not Included”

It’s annoying isn’t it?

Why can’t they just come with batteries?

Alas, they’re not the only things that don’t come with the energy needed to operate effectively.

There are a range of activities that we undertake that require us to do all that we can to motivate ourselves and bring our own energy if we are going to be successful in our endeavours.

We go to work, have a long list of tasks to do, deadlines to meet and targets to achieve…

But the batteries aren’t included.

We get home and are greeted by kids who need our attention and guidance…

But the batteries aren’t included.

We go to church, sing a few songs and listen to a message from the pastor…

But the batteries aren’t included.

We embark upon an exercise regime that’s designed to get us back into shape…

But the batteries aren’t included.

Donald Trump once said, “Without passion you don’t have energy, without energy you have nothing.”

In every aspect of our lives, we need to bring our own energy and enthusiasm.  We need to find the inner resources to get passionate about what we’re doing if we want to do it well.  We have to stop relying on others for motivation and drive.

Because no-one else will do it for us.

The batteries aren’t included!
