Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year and this year has been no exception.

I’ve had an awesome Christmas, with lots of carol services, time off work, outings with the kids, too much food and time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas.

Now that it’s over, I’ve also been thinking that there are a few important themes from Christmas that can carry over to the rest of the year as well.

Here are a few that I can think of:

There are still people in need – I love the generosity that is shown towards the underprivileged at Christmas and many charities are able to increase the services that they provide during this time.  However, I also think that it’s worth remembering that there are still people in need in February, August and other times of the year, so don’t wait until next Christmas before giving again.

Expressions of love are always appreciated – I love my family and see Christmas as a fantastic opportunity to show how much I love each of them through gifts, word and quality time spent together.  As I reflect on the wonderful memories that we are able to create together, again I am reminded that such times don’t need to be reserved for the Christmas season.  In our family, we make a big deal out of birthdays and other occasions, but there is always room for more spontaneous expressions of love to those closest to me.

The birth of Jesus is always worth celebrating – I know that we focus a lot on the nativity story in the weeks leading up to Christmas, but as a passionate Christian, I need to remember the significance of Jesus’ birth a lot more often.

Now that Christmas is over, what do you need to remember?
