I often know what the next step that I should take is.
It’s the second step that’s a mystery.
And that can be a problem, because I really, really, really want to know what happens next.
I really, really, really want to see every step in front of me, all the way to the end.
And so I hesitate.
I wait and see if this mysterious second step will become apparent before taking the first one.
But it doesn’t.
Despite my prayers to the God of the universe to make the future clear.
That next step.
That damned next step.
I know what I should be doing now, but I’m desperate to know how it will play out.
I have a dilemma.
I can stay where I am forever, in a predictable, safe and ultimately unfulfilling world.
Or I can take that next step and move into the space of discomfort, unpredictability and, ultimately, growth.
Martin Luther King, Jnr once said, “Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
We want to know the future and be able to control the next one, five, ten years.
But we can’t.
All we have is the next step.
I dare you to take it.
And let the mystery of the second step become clearer as you go.
