As I tended to the BBQ for Christmas lunch today, I thought about the reason that we celebrate Christmas and wondered what he would feel about our meal.

There are many descriptions about Jesus and two of them struck me as pertinent.

Firstly, He was described by religious leaders as a glutton.

Jesus spent too much time eating with undesirables and sinners for their liking .

He would probably fit in well with our family then.

And then, He was described as Immanuel, which means “God with us.”

Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth as an extraordinary act of love.  He wasn’t distant and remote, He was in the midst of us, moving into the neighbourhood and showing us how we should live.

As I ponder these descriptions, I suspect that he would have loved lunch with our family (and with yours).

And I’m very grateful for that reminder.
